Often wondered who is the number one player of India or your own state? Are you dreaming of representing your state or country in badminton? This detailed guide should help you with the understanding of player ranking - an important factor in securing a place to represent the state or country in any badminton tournament.

This guide covers

What Is Ranking In Badminton?

To evaluate players or pairs(for doubles) performance over a defined timeframe. Rankings present a hierarchical arrangement of players and pairs based on their strengths, determined through a points-based system. These points are awarded when you play a state or national ranking tournament and points vary as you progress in each stage of the tournament.

Why Is Player Ranking Important?

Player ranking serves as a crucial entry criterion for many competitive tournaments. Ranking plays a key role in draws of tournaments, guaranteeing matchups between players or pairs with comparable skill levels. It is a methodical approach that guarantees a thorough assessment of players’ eligibility and skills for participation in diverse tournaments.

Types of Badminton Ranking In India

There are two types of ranking in India for the players to play badminton. It includes:

1. National Ranking (BAI Ranking)

It is the national-level player ranking in India. It allows the players to represent their country in national-level Badminton Tournaments (see BAI tournament calendar).

2. State Ranking in India

Each state run by the state badminton association has its own state-level ranking. By securing it, a player can represent a state in various badminton tournaments.

Eligibility Criteria For Playing Ranking Tournaments in India

Below are some of the important factors that influence the eligibility of players to secure the top position or get a ranking.

  • **BAI-ID: **The BAI-ID is a must-have document for every player.
  • Competition: According to the most recent BAI Ranking, players are categorized into the qualifying and main draws. The seedings are also structured. Vacancies in the draw are addressed by referring to the latest Indian Ranking.
  • **Age and Citizenship of the Player: **The competition may have specific age categories, such as junior, senior, or veteran. Players need to fall within the designated age range for the respective category.
  • Anti-Doping Compliance: Players may need to comply with anti-doping regulations and undergo doping tests to ensure a level playing field.

How Is Ranking Calculated?

The BAI (Badminton Association of India) calculates players’ ranking at the national level, and each state badminton association calculates raking at the state level.

It is calculated as follows:

  1. The top results for each player from the total ranking tournaments held in the last 52 weeks (a specified number of tournaments) are considered. Players / pairs win basic points according to how far they progress in the draw of a particular tournament. e.g.: if you win a tournament, you get the most points. If you’re the runner-up, you get the next highest points. It continues this way, with semi-finalists and so on, each earning fewer points.
  2. The total points for an individual player is obtained by adding 6 highest points scored in tournaments during the previous 52 week period (players who have competed in six or fewer events are worked out by taking total points they have won).
  3. The players are ranked from the highest to the lowest points, so the one with the most points is ranked as No. 1.

How Do I Check National Rankings?

The National rankings(BAI rankings) are constantly released and made accessible after each tournament on the official BAI website (or respective state association website for state-rankings). Visit the player ranking section on the official website to check the current No. 1 in each category. This provides a transparent and easily accessible platform for individuals to check ranking and stay updated.

Based on points and performance, the National/BAI Ranking system determines eligibility and seeding, influencing opportunities at various levels.
